Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art acknowledges it resides on the ancestral territory of the Osage, Kaw, and Otoe-Missouria, among other tribal nations forcibly moved to the region such as the Shawnee, Wyandot, Delaware, Potawatomi, Sac and Fox and Kiikaapoi (Kickapoo) nations. We recognize and support the continued vibrancy of Native communities and cultures today who continue to thrive, as well as the inherent sovereignty of tribal nations. We are compelled to serve and advocate for these communities in accordance with our public mission.

Kemper Museum acknowledges and respects the diversity of Native people connected to this land today. Many recognize the land and all beings who live within it as relatives. We acknowledge the earth we inhabit, the waters of the Blue River, the Kansas River, the Missouri River, and the plants, animals, and people supported by them.

Experience the original composition by Kevin Morby

Sound Sessions: Music for A Life in Frame by Kevin Morby

To accompany the exhibition, Julie Blackmon: A Life in Frame, Kansas City, MO-based musician Kevin Morby, composed a soundscape inspired by Blackmon’s photography. Drawing from the shared themes in their work, Morby blends unique sounds recorded during a summertime visit with the artist in Springfield, MO to create a multi-sensory experience specific to the exhibition at Kemper Museum.

The recording will be accessible via a QR code in the galleries throughout the run of the exhibition, which is on view from Friday, September 15 to Sunday, January 7, 2024. Visitors are also invited to come to the galleries and listen together when the recording is played during the following Sound Sessions: 

7:30 pm on Thursdays (except Nov. 2, Nov. 23, Nov. 30, & Dec. 7)

11:30 am on Saturdays & Sundays (except Dec. 16 & 17)
