Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art acknowledges it resides on the ancestral territory of the Osage, Kaw, and Otoe-Missouria, among other tribal nations forcibly moved to the region such as the Shawnee, Wyandot, Delaware, Potawatomi, Sac and Fox and Kiikaapoi (Kickapoo) nations. We recognize and support the continued vibrancy of Native communities and cultures today who continue to thrive, as well as the inherent sovereignty of tribal nations. We are compelled to serve and advocate for these communities in accordance with our public mission.

Kemper Museum acknowledges and respects the diversity of Native people connected to this land today. Many recognize the land and all beings who live within it as relatives. We acknowledge the earth we inhabit, the waters of the Blue River, the Kansas River, the Missouri River, and the plants, animals, and people supported by them.

Kansas City native Paula Winchester has long sought out nature. Since 2004, when she took up pastels, Paula has put to paper what from nature has inspired her. In 2009, after her sister Rebecca thought her work would look great on a scarf, Paula found a way to do just that, and today she has twelve scarf designs in production, touching China; India; Japan; Portland, Oregon; Tucson, Arizona; the Kauffman Gardens; the grounds of Linda Hall Library; and her own yard. 

Working with a graphic artist, Paula has replicated each chosen pastel across an 80 x 15 inch charmeuse silk scarf. Produced in very limited numbers, her designs are printed in Kolkata, India, using digital technology with the possibility of a million colors on Indian charmeuse silk. 

Herb Gathering, Inc. has been Paula’s life work. Beginning in 1978 to bring fresh herbs to Greater Kansas City, she delivered fresh cut herbs every week for 36 years before selling the company in 2013 – but deliveries are still made on a weekly basis to local grocery stores throughout the region.  

Paula’s passion for nature continues. Her natural gardens leave no room for grass around her Brookside home where she hopes to entice all sorts of wild creatures and pollinators. Who knows how that will turn up next on paper or in a scarf design or on wrist warmers or whatever she decides to create?
