Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art acknowledges it resides on the ancestral territory of the Osage, Kaw, and Otoe-Missouria, among other tribal nations forcibly moved to the region such as the Shawnee, Wyandot, Delaware, Potawatomi, Sac and Fox and Kiikaapoi (Kickapoo) nations. The structure and concept of the bridge has been a major theme of Iranian-born, Minneapolis-based artist Siah Armajani’s work for decades. In celebration of Armajani’s Kansas City No. 1 (2000), gifted by the Sosland Foundation to the Kemper Museum in honor of the Museum’s twentieth anniversary, the exhibition Siah Armajani: Bridge Builder presents the artist’s exploration of the structural and philosophical underpinning of bridges since the late 1960s. In his works depicting bridges, Armajani poetically intertwines social science, art, and architecture to compel the significance of cultural connectivity. The exhibition presented the first-ever survey of close to sixty years of iconic bridge works, including eight large-scale drawings from a series inspired by the landscape, bridges, and vernacular architecture of Kansas City, as well as  additional bridge sculptures from 1968 to the present.
